how difficult was Susanne’s search for all that is published within these pages.  We must be so grateful to her for her tireless efforts.  On most of her pictures she provides the ASHA registration number.  Consider what it took for her to get those numbers –
there was no internet ! ! ! !
I went online and every number I checked was correct ! ! ! !
Taken from Susanne’s Forward:
“… the attempt to gather together scattered odds and ends of information concerning some of the most prominent Saddle Horses in the show ring and in the stud in former years has been an extremely interesting, though at times disappointing, task.  The excursion into the fields of their origin has led the compiler into paths little frequented in the usual pursuit of Saddle Horse history.  When the Farmers Home Journal began publication of short stories in 1930, I was greatly dismayed because of the limited information that could be secured about some of the most famous old sires and matrons, and this lack of authentic information impressed upon me convincingly the necessity of a  work of this kind being done and being done immediately.”
“…nowhere are there complete records to which one may turn for guidance; no archives invite the scholar to invade their treasures; and no dusty tomes inspire the heart with the promise of reward for delving within their musty pages for accounts of the pomp and glory of bygone days…”
It begins with the origin and development of the American Saddle Horse and the 17 original foundation sires.  She tries to give the pedigree and the historical notes on each horse.  Great pictures showing the Prominent Thoroughbred Ancestors of the American Saddle Horse:  Messenger, Grey Eagle, Mambrino, Sir Archy, Diomed and Hedgeford

Thoroughbred will do…..”  “… Charles L. Riley, breeder of both Thoroughbreds and Saddle Horses said:  “Since it takes many other qualities, characteristics and graces beside conformation to round out the Saddle Horse, the query becomes pertinent, can these be found in the Thoroughbred?
My answer is no….”
At the back of the book big report on the World’s Fair – Chicago,
1893
listing all the Champions (Rex McDonald appears here
).  “… best herd was awarded to Gen. John B. Castleman’s string of horses.  The second herd prize went to Mr. Potts and the third to Mr. Harrison both of
Missouri

Championships and Futurities are reported at the end 1916 to 1931.

.  The pitiful picture of Annie C. at age 24 (shown here) I know looks more like a mule, but the poor old gal sure left us her grand legacy.  Bred to Bourbon Chief she gave us
