THIS IS AN ORIGINAL 1930s TRADE - ADVERTISING CARD
H.M.S."MOTOR MINESWEEPER 1"
M.M.S. 1 is the first of a new type of small
minesweeper, designed for clearing harbour
entrances and coastal waters of enemy mines.
She was constructed by Messrs. John I.
Thornycroft & Co., Ltd., the well-known
destroyer builders, at their Hampton-on-
Thames yard, in 1937. Her hull is of wood,
and the motive power consists of three
Thornycroft  Y 12-cylinder petrol engines.
The three shafts drive the propellers through
oil-operated reverse-reduction gears of the
modern wheel-drive type. The total
horse power developed is 1,500, giving a
speed of 15 knots, though when sweeping it
would be impracticable to exceed 10 knots.
The radius of action is 18 hours at full speed.
The displacement of this useful little vessel
is only 32 tons, and her total complement is
11 officers and men.
