H.M.S. "KING GEORGE V"
Battleship, King George V Class
Launched by King George VI in 1939,
H.M.S. King George V embodies an unusual
number of novel features. On a displace-
ment of 35,000 tons she mounts ten 14-inch
and sixteen 5-25-inch guns. Both types of
gun are entirely new weapons of exceptional
range and power. She is the first British battle-
ship designed to carry aircraft, and to mount
most of her big guns in quadruple turrets.
Particular attention has been given to pro-
tection against air bombs, gunfire, mines
and torpedoes. Though no official figure
of speed has been mentioned, there is no
doubt she will be the fastest battleship ever
built for the Royal Navy, with a speed.
expected to exceed 30 knots. Her com-
plement will comprise 1,500 officers and men.
The cost is expected to exceed 8,500,000 Pounds.
