H.M.S. "GUARDIAN"
Net-layer and Target-towing Vessel
In appearance and function the Guardian is
almost unique. In the first place she is
designed for laying anti-submarine nets,
which are stowed, with their sinkers and
buoys, on the upper deck from just forward
of the mainmast to the stern. Abaft the
mainmast and spanning the deck which
contains the nets, is a large photographic
cabin, enabling accurate records to be taken
of the fall of shot when the Guardian is
employed in towing battle practice targets,
her secondary purpose as a warship. The
Guardian is armed with two 4-inch guns on
high-angle mountings, and is propelled at a
speed of 18 knots by geared turbines of
6,500 shaft horse power. She has one semi-
sister ship, of slightly differing design,
H.M.S. Protector.
