Flotilla Leader, Admiralty Type
Flotilla Leaders are somewhat larger than
the normal destroyer of contemporary design
and, apart from certain internal features,
have definite funnel markings which serve to
distinguish them as well as being an indication
of their station in the disposition of the ships
of the Navy. Provision is made for the
additional flotilla staff carried in leaders.
The armament of this ship consists of five
4-7-inch guns, with a number of smaller
weapons. Eight 21-inch torpedo tubes in
quadruple mountings are carried. Geared
turbines of 38,000 h.p. give a speed of 36
knots. The cost of this type of vessel varies,
but is roughly about Sterling 350,000. The Grenville,
which has a displacement of 1,485 tons and
a complement of 175, was built by Messrs.
Yarrow & Co., on the Clyde.
