    H.M.S."EGRET"
    Escort Vessel, Egret Class
The Egret, in common with her sister ships,
the Auckland and Pelican, is the most heavily
armed escort vessel which has yet been built
for the Royal Navy. On a displacement of
1,200 tons she mounts an armament of eight
4-inch guns in dual high-angle mountings.
Geared turbines of 3,600 horse power give
the ship a speed of uver 19 knots. She is
therefore quite a formidable little vessel for
her size, being designed for the protection
of mercantile convoys against air attack. A
number of earlier escort vessels built during
1928-35 will in due course be rearmed on
similar lines to the Egret as they become due
for refit. Two more ships of an improved
Egret design, the Black Swan and the
Flamingo, were laid down in 1938.
