H.M.S."EFFINGHAM"
Cruiser, Improved Birmingham Class
Originally there were five ships of this class,
most of them being laid down during the
latter part of the Great War, with an average
displacement of 9,800 tons; but H.M.S.
Raleigh was lost in 1922, and the Vindictive
(ex-Cavendish) has been demilitarized for use
as a cadets training ship. The remaining
three (Effingham, Hawkins and Frobisher)
are being modernized and rearmed, the
Effingham being the first to be completed.
She now mounts nine 6-inch guns as her main
armament in place of the 7:5-inch guns
originally carried. The armament also
includes four 4-inch anti-aircraft guns,
multiple machine guns and other smaller
pieces, besides four 21-inch torpedo tubes.
Turbines of 58,000 shaft horse power give
her a speed of 29-5 knots,
