H.M.S."ARETHUSA"
Cruiser,  Arethusa Class
The Arethusa belongs to a class of four ships,
which in their main characteristics are
reduced editions of the Leander type. With
a displacement of 5,220 tons, the Arethusa
mounts an armament of six 6-inch guns and
eight 4-inch anti-aircraft guns, besides six
torpedo tubes and smaller weapons. Her
geared turbines of 64,00U horse power give a
speed of 32-25 knots. One seaplane and a
catapult are included in the equipment. In
order that the seaplane may not be subject
to interference by air currents in its position
between the two widely-spaced funnels, the
latter ace streamlined. A considerable reduc-
tion in weight was effected in these ships by
the extensive use of electric welding and the
employment of aluminium-covered piywood
for bulkheads.
