Description
Up for auction is this .00 Series 1896 Silver Certificate, otherwise referred to as a .00 Educational Note. This note features the obverse vignette “
Electricity Presenting Light to the World
”, and was engraved by G.F.C. Smillie, from a painting by Walter Shirlaw.
The reverse vignette features the bust of
Ulysses S. Grant
on the left and
Philip Sheridan
on the right.
Both were Union Army Generals during the Civil War.
Grant naturally went on to become the 18th President of the United States serving in office from March 4,1869 to March 4, 1877.
Lorenzo J. Hatch engraved the portraits of both Generals, and
G.F.C. Smillie engraved the remainder of the design elements found on the back of the note.
The .00 Series 1896 Educational Note is considered by many to be the “Most Beautiful” United States Banknote that was ever produced!
It garners the interest of Both Paper Money Collectors and Non Collectors as a note they covet to own!
This note has a ragged top margin with 14 splits, the largest is 3/16
th
of an inch and most of them are 1/8 of an inch or less.
The bottom margin has around 15 splits, the longest being 1/4
th
of an inch, another is 3/16th of an inch, five are 1/8
th
of an inch, and the other eight are 1/16
th
of an inch or less.
The left side margin has five splits, the largest being 1/8 of an inch long, only two of which are clearly noticeable in the scan.
None of those five splits make it into the design.
The right-side margin has two splits, the most visible is a 1/4
th
of an inch split that stops just short of touching the design, there is a tiny amount of paper loss.
The second split is just below the first split, measures 5/16ths of an inch and goes into the design by about 1/8
th
of an inch, but is closed up nicely.
If you don’t see any paper in the scan, you have to assume that its missing or gone!
I have attempted to mark the larger splits in orange on the scans. As with any note in this condition, there are some pinholes and tiny internal splits, but these are minor, and I mention strictly for accuracy sake.
This note is well worn and used but actually retains nice color and contrast for the grade.
I would grade this note as a Very Good, the note does have splits but it is all there and intact.
Please look at the scans carefully and judge the grade and quality of this note for yourself.
This note should appeal to the budget minded collector, who wants to own an affordable example of this design without spending ,000 + for a similar problem free example.
