Drumroll please.... Up for sale is the rarest note I have ever had. Looking for the trophy of trophies that no one else has? This note is for you!!!!It is an 1899 "Mini Porthole" or "Mechanics and Agriculture" Silver Certificate *Pre-Star Replacement*. This is the first Mini Porthole Pre-Star Replacement to ever be offered on the market. A true Discovery Note. There are only two in existence and the other is in a private collection and has never come up for sale from any record I can find. This stunning rarity is PMG graded XF-40 EPQ with the designation Fr 249R and notation of the variety.
What is a Pre-Star Replacement you may ask? Collectors are very familiar with Star Notes, they are special notes made to replace damaged or defective notes at the BEP before being put into packs and released. They have special star characters in their serial number to denote they are replacements. But Star Notes were first authorized and invented in 1910. Before that, if any sheet was found to be defective, an identical sheet was printed up and serial numbered with the identical serial numbers to be replaced. Before 1903, there was absolutely no way to tell them apart as they were all done on the same equipment. From 1903-1910, regular notes were printed on the new high speed rotary presses, but their numbering blocks were difficult to reset, and so they decided that replacement sheets were to be printed on the older equipment. This meant that there was a very subtle difference in the notes that could be identified now. So Pre-Star Replacements can only be identified on notes from 1903-1910. However, without the Star in the serial number, collectors back then and the general public really had no idea what these were and so pretty much none were saved or survived. Only two have ever surfaced in this 1899 Mini Porthole series.
That makes this note rarer than any following Star Note. This is even rarer than coveted notes like the 1880 Black Back silver certificates and 1886-1890 Ornate Back varieties. Some of them sell in the tens of thousands of dollars high grade, and in the case of 0 Treasury Notes, they list for 0,000-0,000 and both signatures have more known notes than this! Even in small size notes, a 1933 silver certificate lists for ,200 in XF and that is with 67 known! Technicolor notes also sell for ,200 in XF with over 100 known!
So if you want a note that will blow away all your fellow collectors and be the crowning piece of your collection, this is for you. Not even famous millionaire collections have this! Strictly by the population numbers and how rare this piece truly is, this should be in with the kings of currency at 0,000+ but this just does not have the fame and attention (yet) of the popular notes I mentioned above. But I have a feeling its day will come. I have best offer enabled but please do not lowball. This is the scarcest piece of currency I have ever had and probably ever will, and there is something to be said for owning the first ever example of a type to be offered to the market. In this grade, even if it was a more common signature star note, it would still list for ,000. And this is one-of-a-kind. The last discovery note I saw come up for sale fetched ,000 so this is likely similar. Sent registered mail for maximum safety. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
